Hackerspace Planning

Detailed here are the steps and items we need to take care of for creating a Hackerspace for the Las Vegas dorkbot/electronics enthusiest/hacker/maker community.

  • Our hackerspace has a name
  • SYN Shop

  • Establish a business license
  • This is critical to our success, since without it we are unable to do many of the key things required to get a space, plus it serves to help protect the members from legal liability should we get sued, etc... Eventually the goal would be a non-profit license, but initially, it looks like it will be quicker to use a conventional business license such as a LLC, and then work on the requirements to get non-profit status.

  • Determine what our operating costs will be like

Lets face it, this isn't going to be free. Someone has to pay for it. If we can get some help and financial backing, great. But we should plan on some sort of paid membership. For that we need to determine:

    • How much space do we need?
    • What are the costs for leasing the space looking like.
    • What will utilities likely cost us.
    • How many people do we have who are willing to spend their money to create a hacker space.
    • What kinds of things will we need to build out the hacker space once we have a location.
    • What things can we do to raise money so the entire operating costs are not on the members alone.
  • Find a location

That's the whole point. Currently the city is trying to revitalize the downtown area around the arts district. This is great, since it's near and around many other artists studios, and like minded individuals. We'll get exposure from First Friday and other arts district events. And importantly we should be able to find suitable office space for an inexpensive cost per square foot.
